Cylinder bushings within a hydraulic system allow for the movement of parts while isolating vibration, reducing friction, and absorbing shock. You often hear bushings referred to as part of the bearing family. Although they are not pure bearings, they perform a similar function.
Bushings also facilitate the smooth transfer of energy from one direction to another, such as the rod bushing that connects the rod to the piston.

Spherical Ball Bushings
These bushings permit the rotation of a shaft that moves at an angle to the busing. These are self-aligning, allow for articulating joints, and, depending on the bushing specifications, allow for a high load.
Rod Bushings
You will typically find rod bushings at the smaller end of the connecting rod. They absorb the shock of the piston as it is forced up and down the cylinder bore by the pressure of hydraulic fluid. They also reduce friction and support the wrist pin.
Split Tension Bushings
Split tension bushings often replace solid steel and case-hardened tubular parts. They are hollow cylinders that guide the shaft through a bore, preventing friction and wear. They function well in high-load/low-speed operations and harsh, non-lubricated environments.
Self-Aligning Ball Bearings
Self-aligning ball bearings accommodate applications where aligning the shaft and housing is problematic or where the shaft may bend, such as transmission shafts. The outer spherical raceway permits movement of the inner ring, ball bearings, and cage, all rotating freely around the bearing center.
